Atlassian Data Center: what next?
What does Atlassian's announcement about Data Center end of life mean for your organisation?
Atlassian has officially announced the sunsetting of Data Center, a major milestone on their journey towards their Cloud-first vision. At The Adaptavist Group, we see this as a moment of opportunity for organisations planning their next steps.
Here's the timeline:
- 30 March 2026
- New customers will no longer be able to buy Data Center licences
- End of Marketplace sales to new customers
- 30 March 2028
- End of licence sales for existing customers
- End of expansions for existing Data Center licences
- End of Marketplace app sales to existing customers
- 28 March 2029
- Data Center subscriptions expire, and instances will become read-only
The good news: you have options
If your strategy had been to remain on Data Center, this news might feel a little alarming, but don't panic: you have options for how to approach what comes next.
As a multi-Platinum Atlassian Partner, we've been involved in easy migrations, tricky migrations, and migrations for organisations who didn't ever picture their businesses running on cloud. The wisdom we'd pass on: you don't have to move everything at once, and you can do more to optimise your setup for your organisation than you might think.
Not everything has to move to Atlassian Cloud by default, but you might be surprised by what's achievable with the right partner.
When was the last time you assessed Cloud?
In Atlassian's own words, 'Atlassian Cloud has come lightyears from where it started'. If you explored Cloud when Server end of life was announced and decided it wasn't for you, this is the time to take another look. Atlassian has made great strides in addressing the customer challenges that prevented cloud from being the obvious route.
- User limits: With 50,000 user tiers for Jira Service Management, 100,000 user tiers for Jira and 150,000 on Confluence, previous concerns about user limits have been addressed for most enterprise organisations.
- Data Residency: Data residency for the core app is now available in over 12 locations worldwide, with Atlassian adding more all the time.
- Cloud Fortification: Atlassian has engaged with Marketplace partners to establish processes and procedures to ensure security is built into Jira and Confluence apps from the outset.
- Optional Rovo AI: Atlassian has invested considerably in the optional implementation of AI in Atlassian Cloud which draws on the power of the Teamwork Graph and also connects with other third party sources.
- Atlassian Isolated Cloud: If you need your data to be held independently of any other organisation, then Atlassian Isolated Cloud is the solution for this challenge, launching 2026.
- Atlassian Government Cloud: Designed to meet the specific requirements of those who require FedRAMP moderate authorisation.
- Automation limits: Automation limits for Cloud customers have increased. For those with particularly hefty or complex needs, ScriptRunner offers unlimited automation.
- Analytics and data lake: It is now possible to connect your Atlassian tools to third party analytics for actionable organisation insights.
Beyond the core platform, be sure to also revisit the functionality of the Atlassian Marketplace apps that make your business run better. At first glance, it might appear that the value you are looking for cannot be replicated in Cloud, but significant advances have been made by Marketplace partners such as ScriptRunner and Kolekti.
Make sure that assumptions or outdated information don't get in the way of you making the right call when choosing your organisation's next steps.
Time to start planning
With the timelines that Atlassian has provided, you have time to rally your stakeholders and explore your options, but we see migrations taking 6-12+ months to complete. The moment has arrived to begin building your Data Center end of life strategy.
